RapidShare is a German-owned one-click hosting pay- and free-service (with certain restrictions and limitations) website that operates from Switzerland and is financed by the subscriptions of paying users. Rapidshare is one of the world's largest file-hosting sites, with 5 petabytes of files on its servers, and handling up to three million users simultaneously. HistoryRapidShare currently still operates two different websites. The original site is RapidShare.de, which uses the German top-level domain ".de", and the organization has its central office in Cham, Switzerland. The second website, RapidShare.com has been operated and maintained simultaniously to RapidShare.de. As of March 1st, 2010, the website at RapidShare.de will be permanently shut down, and users visiting this site will be forwarded to RapidShare.com. I live on campus in a residence hall, and they've got really strict rules on file sharing and they can take away your internet or computer if you violate them, but i'm not sure whether or not rapidshare/megaupload are legal. My guess is that you already knew that downloading any form of music without purchase is illegal, but your real question is if you can get caught by downloading from megaupload/rapidshare Since youre not uploading to any other users and it is a direct download it would be very difficult for the school to know what you are downloading. On the other hand, if you were getting music from bittorrent or p2p network it would be easier for the school to find out based on the traffic generated from uploads as well as connections to other users.
