An artist is a person engaged in one or more of any of a broad spectrum of activities related to creating art, practicing the arts and/or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse is a practitioner in the visual arts only. The term is often used in the entertainment business, especially in a business context, for musicians and other performers (less often for actors). "Artiste" (the French for artist) is a variant used in English only in this context. Use of the term to describe writers, for example, is certainly valid, but less common, and mostly restricted to contexts like criticism. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How much do Artists for big companies make? Q. Like, concept artists, story artists, all the people that do traditional art for the most part at big companies like Pixar, DreamWorks, and Blizzard. What kinds of artists make the most money, and what majors or other qualifications would you need to acquire in College to eventually achieve a position like this? Thanks. Ultimately I think it takes a combination of connections (to get you the interview) recommendations to get you consideration and an outstanding portfolio that blows the employers away. Conceivably you could start out making a quarter million a year with room to prove yourself at a Disney or Pixar gig. I don't see an individual artist making much more than that. Perhaps an Art Director for a company like that would make a couple million a year, but that job is gold-plated and protected by the national gaurd. (very hard to get) you would no doubt need an MBA or a PHD in the arts for such consideration Answered by Spenny - Mon Dec 15 01:20:42 2008 Is it normal for artists to fall into a bit of depression after they have finished a project? Q. I'm an artist and I created something really different and beautiful a fews days ago. A few people have commented on how wonderful and very clever it is, but i couldn't sleep stressing that it wasn't good enough. Is it normal for artists to fall into a bit of depression after they have finished a project? Thanks. Asked by Purity - Sun Mar 30 18:52:14 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yeah, I think so. It's not just artists either, when you're working on anything thats important to you then you are focused, you are working towards a goal. When you finally achieve that goal then you get a sense of satisfaction and pride. However, as you have been so focused on this one thing, once it is completed it is natural to feel a bit empty without it. It'll pass, my advice would be to start a new project as soon as possible! Q. How has the work of Jackson Pollock influenced artists who came after him? Why is he considered an important artist? Asked by bad_boyz0218 - Fri Sep 5 12:12:21 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. He is important because liberated what artists could do--spray a canvas with paint dripping from a can, etc. He encouraged the controlled use of the non-deliberate: Pollock doesn't plan where every splatter and splot goes; the artist becomes the medium through which art is created rather than being a Godlike manipulator. He also brought into question the form of art. Cut an enormous Jackson Pollock picture in two and you have two Jackson Pollock pictures. That forces the viewer to consider the arbitrary, as does his technique.
